Specializing Google

Lorcan

In association with the Frankfurt Book Fair literacy campaign (Litcam) and Unesco’s Institute for Lifelong Learning, Google has launched the Google Literacy Project.
It collocates access to a range of Google resources: book search, scholar, blogger, blogsearch, groups, maps, video. Interestingly, the main Google search engine is not included.
It does some work to specialize stuff to the topic (e.g. within the maps section), and there are some canned searches. Overall, one could imagine how it could be more specialized to the needs of those interested in this topic and how the various services presented could be more integrated.
However, it is interesting seeing the collection of Google services laid out in this way.

The technology career ladder

Library leaders should be drawn from across the organization. Any idea that technology leaders are overly specialised or too distant from general library work is outmoded and counter-productive.
