Patterns of collecting of non-us books in ARL libraries

Lorcan

ARL has just released a report on patterns of collection of non-US books in member libraries based on an analysis of their holdings in Worldcat [pdf]

The report “Changing Global Book Collection Patterns in ARL Libraries” was prepared for the Global Resources Network (GRN) by: Mary E. Jackson, Auto-Graphics, Inc. (formerly Association of Research Libraries); Lynn Silipigni Connaway, OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc.; Edward T. O’Neill, OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc.; and Eudora Loh, University of California, Los Angeles. [Association of Research Libraries :: Report Documents Changes in Global Collection Patterns in ARL Libraries]

Main findings are the low levels of overlap between ARL collections and the progressive decline in volume of acquisition of non-US titles.
The WorldMap was developed in association with this project.

So-called soft skills are hard

So-called soft skills are important across a range of library activities. Existing trends will further amplify this importance. Describing these skills as soft may be misleading, or even damaging. They should be recognized as learnable and teachable, and should be explicitly supported and rewarded.

The technology career ladder

Library leaders should be drawn from across the organization. Any idea that technology leaders are overly specialised or too distant from general library work is outmoded and counter-productive.
