A roundup of repositories

Lorcan 1 min read

UKOLN have made the presentations from the DELOS Digital Repositories: Interoperability and Common Services workshop available.
This provides a useful roundup of repository initiatives. Depending on your perspective you might admire the interesting range of work underway, the convergence on particular technologies, and the welcome reuse of software and tools, or you might be concerned about the multiple climbing of learning curves, the reinvention of wheels, and the not invented here syndrome 😉
Repository is still one of those words which means different things to different people. However:

We are moving away from thinking about a repository as a ‘bucket’ into which we pour content. And towards a sense of repository as a set of services on managed objects. Different repository frameworks might provide different services in different configurations. [Lorcan Dempsey’s weblog: Repositories ain’t what they used to be …]

Library leaders should be drawn from across the organization. Any idea that technology leaders are overly specialised or too distant from general library work is outmoded and counter-productive.
