More on library portals

Lorcan

I have agreed to write regularly for Update Magazine, the publication of CILIP in the UK. The first article to appear is on portals.

Stepping back, we can see some trends. A major one is growing awareness that the library portal is only one step towards creating an effective network presence. We are used to thinking about the integration of information resources with each other. However, the real integration to be aimed for is the more effective integration of information resources into the research and learning workflows of the user. The library portal may be a means towards this end, but it should not be confused with that end. [CILIP | Pick up a Portal – Lorcan Dempsey]

So-called soft skills are hard

So-called soft skills are important across a range of library activities. Existing trends will further amplify this importance. Describing these skills as soft may be misleading, or even damaging. They should be recognized as learnable and teachable, and should be explicitly supported and rewarded.

The technology career ladder

Library leaders should be drawn from across the organization. Any idea that technology leaders are overly specialised or too distant from general library work is outmoded and counter-productive.
