Henry Gladney talks about the different approaches taken by NARA and Library of Congress to preservation as an example of different practices of records managers and digital libraries. IMHO libraries will take on more of the ‘records management’ perspective as digital libraries develop. Think of provenance, context and authenticity for example.
Consider current activity at NARA and at LoC.It should not be surprising that what is urgent in managing office records might be different from what is urgent for cultural works. The topics and language of articles by NARA and its San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) research partner are so different from those in other digital preservation literature that some readers might find their papers difficult to understand. How can NARA be ready to acquire a large-scale digital archive system when LoC seems far from understanding what digital preservation service it might need?
The promise and challenge of Generative AI is now central. This is a summary overview of some of the major directions and issues, acknowledging that things are moving very quickly. I intend it as background to later posts about library implications and developments.
