Presentations describing projects shortlisted for the Digital Preservation Award for 2005 have been made available.

The Digital Preservation Award of 5,000 is sponsored by the Digital Preservation Coalition. This prestigious Award recognises the many new initiatives being undertaken in the challenging field of digital preservation. The Digital Preservation Award is presented as part of the Conservation Awards, held every eighteen months. The 2005 Conservation Awards will be presented at an event held at the British Museum on 22nd November. [Digital Preservation Coalition – DP Award 2005 – Shortlist]

These include a presentation [pdf] made by my colleague Brian Lavoie on behalf of the PREMIS preservation metadata initiative, sponsored by OCLC and RLG.
There are some interesting other projects on the shortlist, and a nice international focus. There are projects from the UK and The Netherlands as well as from the UK.
The Digital Preservation Coalition has also just made available a Technology Watch report [pdf] on preservation metadata written jointly by Brian and Richard Gartner.

The technology career ladder

Library leaders should be drawn from across the organization. Any idea that technology leaders are overly specialised or too distant from general library work is outmoded and counter-productive.
