Computing at the network level

Lorcan 1 min read

The blogs are alive with the sound of EC2. EC2 stands for Elastic Compute Cloud, a wonderfully descriptive name. This is the latest instalment of the Amazon as platform story. It provides flexible on-demand computational capacity. Sourcing options are becoming more interesting, and it underlines how over the next few years the options for how we secure many services will be enhanced by on-demand network offerings.

Just as Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) enables storage in the cloud, Amazon EC2 enables “compute” in the cloud. Amazon EC2’s simple web service interface allows you to obtain and configure capacity with minimal friction. It provides you with complete control of your computing resources and lets you run on Amazon’s proven computing environment. Amazon EC2 reduces the time required to obtain and boot new server instances to minutes, allowing you to quickly scale capacity, both up and down, as your computing requirements change. Amazon EC2 changes the economics of computing by allowing you to pay only for capacity that you actually use. [Amazon.com Amazon Web Services Store: Amazon EC2 / Amazon Web Services]

The technology career ladder

Library leaders should be drawn from across the organization. Any idea that technology leaders are overly specialised or too distant from general library work is outmoded and counter-productive.
