I notice that the A9 search box now appears on Amazon. There is also an A9 Toolbar.

A9 is headed up by Udi Manber who rejoiced in the interesting title Chief Algorithms Officer while he worked for Amazon. He is credited with developing Amazon’s Search inside the book technology.

Manber described “Search Inside the Book” as the most exciting project he had ever worked on and gave an overview of process of scanning 33 million pages from more than 120,000 books while creating the text-search tool. “There were lots of monitoring tools, lots of testing, lots of databases and lots of support for huge data. The entire thing took about six months to launch and it’s something I’m very proud of.” [‘Future of Search Will Make you Dizzy’]

Library leaders should be drawn from across the organization. Any idea that technology leaders are overly specialised or too distant from general library work is outmoded and counter-productive.
