Mobile apps and Google traffic

I have mentioned the often interesting Hitwise blog a few times. They have presented a couple of interesting analyses recently.
One looks at the searches for mobile applications after the recent new iPhone release. They look at specific applications and also at general application areas. It is interesting seeing the emphasis on social networking, communication and music radio.

I ran a search term suggestions report for the phrase ‘iPhone app’ to get a sense of which applications consumers were searching for outside of the iTunes interface. Last week, social networking, instant messaging, and radio applications were very popular along with the game Super Monkey Ball, which has been prominently featured in the application store and receives many favorable reviews. Other applications that work with Twitter were also being searched along with the NYTimes application. A few brands are also coming up frequently in search that do not as of yet have official applications (although the services can be accessed through other applications) are for the two popular photo-sharing websites Flickr and Picasa, as well as Internet phone service provider Skype. eBooks and eBook readers figures on the list of general applications.
And another looks at the relative traffic to Google sites. The context was the rumored acquisition of Digg by Google and they show Digg’s relative position in the table. Here I was interested to see where Google Book Search figures – right between Orkut and Picasa Web Albums. I was also interested to note that Google Scholar did not make the list of the top 20 at all.

Celebrating Ohio

A temporary relocation makes me realize how much there is to like and to say about Ohio, where we have lived for the last 22 years. We moved to Ohio from the UK (and lived in Ireland before that). Here are some observations based on our travels around the State over the years.
