The [Public Lending Right](https://www.plr.uk.com/?ref=lorcandempsey.net) is a mechanism for distributing funds to authors based on circulation of their books in UK public libraries. It provides an interesting measure of popularity. The PLR has just released the [list](https://www.plr.uk.com/mediaCentre/mediaReleases/feb2009%281%29.pdf?ref=lorcandempsey.net) \[pdf\] of the highest circulating authors in 2007/2008\. [James Patterson](https://worldcat.org/identities/lccn-n78-86409?ref=lorcandempsey.net) is now the most circulated author. Before him it was [Jacqueline Wilson](https://worldcat.org/identities/lccn-n50-15537?ref=lorcandempsey.net) (now in second place), and before her it was [Catherine Cookson](https://worldcat.org/identities/lccn-n79-45994?ref=lorcandempsey.net), who was enormously popular for many years.
