On the politics and business of standards making …..

> Bob Sutor, vice president of open source and standards, tells me that Big Blue has decided to cast a cold eye over the performance of the standards bodies it belongs to – which number “several hundred” – and may drop its links to some. The process of creating standards is “much more broken than people realised”, he said: in particular, there is a lack of transparency in some bodies about how decisions are arrived at or even how membership of the standards groups is set, which opens the system to abuse. \[[FT.com | Tech Blog | IBM takes a blunt axe to its dealings with standards-setters](https://blogs.ft.com/techblog/2008/09/ibm-takes-a-blunt-axe-to-its-dealings-with-standards-setters/?ref=lorcandempsey.net)\]
