I notice that Harold Pinter [has won](https://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/4324562.stm?ref=lorcandempsey.net) the Nobel Prize for literature. I also saw the other day [a suggestion](https://observer.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,6903,1588148,00.html?ref=lorcandempsey.net) that the jury had delayed their decision amid reports of disagreement over making the award to Turkish author, Orhan Pamuk.  
One sometimes wonders what non-literary factors weigh in the balance in these decisions.  
For example, does the fact that Northern Irish poet [Seamus Heaney](https://nobelprize.org/literature/laureates/1995/heaney-bio.html?ref=lorcandempsey.net) recently won the award reduce the chance of winning of Northern Irish poet [Paul Muldoon](https://www.paulmuldoon.net/?ref=lorcandempsey.net)?
