# Code4lib and programmers

A [schedule](https://www.code4lib.org/2006/schedule?ref=lorcandempsey.net) has been posted for [Code4lib 2006](https://www.code4lib.org/2006/?ref=lorcandempsey.net). I am pleased that several of my colleagues ([Devon Smith](https://www.oclc.org/research/staff/smith.htm?ref=lorcandempsey.net), [Jeff Young](https://www.oclc.org/research/staff/young.htm?ref=lorcandempsey.net) and [Thom Hickey](https://outgoing.typepad.com/outgoing/?ref=lorcandempsey.net)) are presenting.  
This promises to be a different sort of library conference, one where participants talk about their experiences actually building systems and services.  
There has been some [discussion](https://scilib.typepad.com/science%5Flibrary%5Fpad/2005/12/the%5Flibrary%5F20%5F.html?ref=lorcandempsey.net) of late in various places about whether libraries would benefit from programming skills on staff (programmers, or maybe [scripters](https://scilib.typepad.com/science%5Flibrary%5Fpad/2005/12/librarians%5Fshou.html?ref=lorcandempsey.net)). I find it strange that this is even a point of discussion: yes clearly they would, and we see examples of why all around us. Of course, a more difficult question arises when one has to allocate scarce resources across multiple demands and to make those choices with requirements changing around us.
