Discussion in the library community sometimes seems to imagine that XML alone can deliver full interoperability. A nice corrective:

> **JavaOne Today:** What’s the most common nonsensical notion about XML?
>
> **Bosak:** I guess that XML will, by itself, solve the information interchange problem. In reality, XML just clears away some of the syntactical distractions so that we can get down to the big problem: how we arrive at common understandings about knowledge representation. That’s the biggie. XML says, “let’s stop arguing about how we’re going to represent trees and how we’re going to represent attribute/value pairs.” We’ll just decide, “Let’s do it \[as XML\]”. \[[Fathering XML](https://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/javaone00/j1-00-bosak.html?ref=lorcandempsey.net)\]
