Robert Darnton’s plangent [discussion](https://www.nybooks.com/articles/22281?ref=lorcandempsey.net) of the proposed Google Book Search agreement in the New York Review of Books was widely noticed. In particular, I was interested to read comments from the different perspectives of [Paul Courant](https://paulcourant.net/2009/02/04/google-robert-darnton-and-the-digital-republic-of-letters/?ref=lorcandempsey.net) (University Librarian and Dean of Libraries at the University of Michigan, a major partner in the Google enterprise and a pioneer in creating and managing digital collections) and [Tim O’Reilly](https://radar.oreilly.com/2009/01/competition-in-the-ebook-marke.html?ref=lorcandempsey.net) (who has helped shape our view of the current network environment, and proponent of the interesting view that [book search should be like web search](https://radar.oreilly.com/archives/2006/12/book-search-sho.html?ref=lorcandempsey.net)).
